The hills are alive...

For those expecting a review of CYT’s Sound of Music (SOM) the Monday after the final performance, I am sorry to disappoint. I needed time to process what I had just gone through before, during and after the show because of my emotional attachment to SOM.
During my senior year of high school, I performed in our production of the Sound of Music as Captain Von Trapp. I will be the first to admit I have a horrible singing voice, but I was cast and gave the part everything I had.

But enough of my trip down amnesia lane, let’s get back to the topic at hand.
My eye was first drawn to the expertly designed and painted sets. I personally know a young lady who helped paint the sets over the course of a weekend. A lover of the arts and a woman with such a giving heart, she threw on some sweatpants, made sure she had good music to jam to, grabbed her paint brushes and lent her talents to CYT. It is this kind of community involvement that makes me feel that CYT will be an organization I will support for many years to come. In fact, I have cancelled my memberships to several national performing arts groups and decided to focus on CYT. Unless they let me down, which they did NOT do with Sound of Music.
The story is one for the ages. Widowed father meets girl who thinks she wants to be a nun but realizes she can serve God better by being a wife, mother and musical performer while he is involved with a lady who turns out to be a Nazi sympathizer all set against the backdrop of Austria near the beginning of World War II. A story that people can really relate to. But the story is just the appetizer. It is the music that tells this tale. And CYT’s commitment to the purity of the music is what made this performance stand out.
The cast did an amazing job with very complex music while bringing a freshness to a timeless classic. Sometimes theater groups shy away from the classics. I myself had to convince others that we were not ready for an updated version of Peter Pan where the entire story takes places in space and involves several difficult pyrotechnic sequences. It would have been amazing though if we had taken the risk.
As with other CYT productions, the acting was done well and the costumes were amazing. My eye was constantly drawn to the young girl cast as Brigitta. She brought an innocence AND maturity to the role that I have not seen since Angela Cartwright did back in ’65. For those of you who don’t know who Ms. Cartwright is its call IMDB.com…
The entire cast and crew should be congratulated for their hard work and dedication. Once again CYT has delivered a great performance. And although I did not win any of the show auctions, I know I will be back for more CYT shows.
Up next, Honk, a show that I am not familiar with and Les Misérables
, a show everyone should know. I think I will start my review of Les Mis now since the performance will probably be close to 5 hours long…
Until next time, please support the arts in your community. It just makes sense…
